In January of 1929, 22-year-old Edna Vargo died in Chicago from an abortion performed that day by Katherine Bajda. Bajda was identified as a homemaker.

She was held by the Coroner in mid-February. Three days later, 25-year-old Violet Diancalana died in Bajda's home, of complications of a criminal abortion performed on her there that day. Bajda was indicted for felony murder by a grand jury.
