In May of 1901, Jessie Matteson, a homemaker, died from an illegal abortion in Chicago.
Jessie's husband, Guy, was arrested, as was Dr. John B. Butts, who was held by Coroner's Inquest.

Butts, born in September of 1850 in New York, married his wife, Mary, in 1887. They had a daughter, a son, and two live-in servants, Hattie Thomas.and Bertha Ehlert.
